ASM Academy is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The safety, wellbeing, and protection of every child participating in our programmes is our highest priority.
We recognise our duty of care and ensure that all activities are delivered in safe, supportive, and positive environments.
Safeguarding is embedded across all ASM Academy services, including:
School PE and sport programmes
Mentoring and student support
Classroom support
After-school clubs
Holiday camps and enrichment activities
1. Our Commitment
ASM Academy is committed to ensuring that:

Children are protected from abuse, neglect, and harm
All staff understand and follow safeguarding procedures
Concerns are acted upon immediately and appropriately
Safe environments are maintained for all activities
We operate a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, discrimination, bullying, or inappropriate behaviour.
2. Scope of This Policy
This policy applies to:
All ASM Academy staff
Coaches, mentors, and support staff
Volunteers and contractors
Any individuals working on behalf of ASM Academy
It applies across all environments where ASM Academy operates, including:
Schools
Sports facilities
Community venues
Activity and enrichment locations
3. Safeguarding Leadership
ASM Academy appoints a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) responsible for:
Safeguarding procedures and oversight
Staff safeguarding training
Managing safeguarding concerns and incidents
Liaising with schools and external authorities where required
All safeguarding concerns must be reported immediately to the safeguarding lead or a senior member of staff.
4. Safe Recruitment
ASM Academy follows strict recruitment and vetting procedures to ensure the suitability of all staff working with children.
These include:
Identity verification
Employment history checks
Reference checks
Enhanced DBS checks where required
Safeguarding training before working with children
No staff member is permitted to work unsupervised with children until appropriate checks have been completed.
5. Training and Awareness
All ASM Academy staff receive safeguarding training appropriate to their role.
Training includes:
Recognising signs of abuse or neglect
Safeguarding responsibilities
Reporting procedures
Maintaining professional boundaries
Training is refreshed regularly to ensure staff remain informed of safeguarding best practice.
6. Professional Conduct
All staff must:
Act as positive role models
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries
Treat children with dignity and respect
Use appropriate language and behaviour at all times
Staff must avoid situations where they are alone with a child unless this is appropriate within the activity and safeguarding procedures are followed.
7. Responding to Safeguarding Concerns
If a safeguarding concern arises:
The concern will be recorded clearly and accurately
The safeguarding lead will be informed immediately
Appropriate action will be taken in line with safeguarding procedures
External agencies may be contacted where required
All safeguarding concerns are handled confidentially and sensitively.
8. Reporting a Concern
Safeguarding concerns can be raised by:
Staff
Schools
Parents or guardians
Young people themselves
All concerns are taken seriously and investigated appropriately.
No person will be penalised for raising a genuine safeguarding concern.
If a child is in immediate danger, emergency services should be contacted immediately.
9. Photography and Media
Photos or videos of children may only be taken:
With appropriate consent
For agreed purposes such as promotion or quality assurance
Parents or schools may withdraw consent at any time.
10. Partnership with Schools and Parents
Safeguarding is a shared responsibility.
ASM Academy works closely with:
School safeguarding leads
Senior leadership teams
Parents and guardians
Local safeguarding services
to ensure safe and consistent safeguarding practice.
